Sure, they're gone, but that's not the only place on the internet, or even in the world. This is why people have backup systems.
And for things that aren't just random lists of random data, I'd recommend just giving the info to somebody else. Whether that's your parents, your best friend, your local police, or some random person from the internet who you feel sorry for.

You can't retrieve deleted files using common software on your computer, but if you have access to a computer with another OS (i.e. you have a friend or family member who has it), it is possible to recover your deleted files.

If you think about it, those files are, for all intents and purposes, gone. From the point of view of the storage medium, they are there, they're just no longer accessible. There are some cases where there are ways to recover information from memory, but in the case of documents, your stuff is unlikely to be there.
The most you could do is make it very inconvenient for someone else to use your computer. If your stuff is sensitive, then all they would need to do to prevent it from working is run your hardware or software.
